Can you get rid of swirl marks on plastic trim?
« on: 21 January 2012, 13:09 »
Bit of a sh!te question I know but I'm looking (still ) for some body coloured bumpers but I've seen some which have swirly marks on the plastic trim , and was just wondering how you get them out (presumably you can). Its just i don't want to buy bumpers with swirly marks on and not be able to get rid of them properly or for them to come back over time even if I used some restoration products. I know, naff question but I thought I better do my homework before I commit.

Not the best example but heres what I mean:

Cheers for any tips people

Use a heat gun, there's plenty of videos on youtube

Alternatively source some body coloured Vr6 bumpers without the plastic trim

Cheers Dom, had a look on youtube and found a few decent how to's . How do peoples bumpers actually get like that? Is it by using a machine polisher to apply bumper care products?

Still to this day don't know how you managed to part with you 8v btw - looked immaculate

^ It's nothing to do with products applied mate, it comes from the injection moulding process and the outer surface degrading over time, heating it up will bring some of the original colour to the surface but you'd probably only be able to do it once, using vinyl protectants from day one would help prevent some but not all of it.

Ahh I see , my dad does have a heat gun so i could give that a shot if i did get a set of bumpers with this swirl mark issue.

I guess my final question is... if i did acquire a set of bumpers with this swirly trim problem and used the heat gun on them followed by an application of a good quality trim restoration product... would i still be able to achive a deep dark black showroom standard trim like some of the cars on here...

I've had C4 recommended to me but would that do the trick? What do others use/reccomend?

Cheers people
