Silly law being rushed through (or trying to) for all the wrong reasons, mostly to 'protect' the money media houses make. It's like the Digital economy Act over here, though that didn't receive as much attention

I can understand the reasons for wanting to protect IP, but do worry what other measures will be sneaked by in disguise....

I think the "free" internet of the 90's and 00's will soon be a thing of the past, but with our new found dependencey on apps, Iphones and Golfgti.co.uk we will pay up or comply without too much of a fuss

It doesn't effect us a great deal in the UK, but the DEA (digital economy act) does. There were a bunch of laws in the DEA that would have effected photographers, but they kicked up enough of a fuss that part was removed before the law came into force, yet not much fuss was made about the rest of the law

Yeah, just wish people here would have done the same to stop the DEA

Thankfully the only site to have been blocked is newsbin and only on BT's internet products (other companies using the BT network like Sky, Talk talk etc haven't blocked it).

Sure companies need to protect their IP BUT at what cost?

The music and movie industry say they're loosing money because of digital piracy ... piracy existed on VHS tapes! Just that was harder to stop, but hey it's all digital now and 'easier' to block, though easy to get around said blocks. They are making more money than ever and they just want to make more, though I doubt they would make more anyway, they just think they will.

That's under a different law which takes time and they have to sue them to take it down, it was also a US based company which is why/how they could do that. SOPA is to block websites nation wide outside of the USA's jurisdiction. There are many ways to get around what the US are proposing anyway, it's only going to stop the occasional illegal downloader.

I thought it was a Hong Kong based company but had some servers in the US hence why they could shut them down, as i said is just the start of what they have planned

Well good enough as US based (the whole case, though it was an international effort) having over 500 servers in the US and a bunch of staff there too, as well as consistently repeating the fact they're "protecting American Intellectual property and copyright materials", and being started by the US feds...
