its strange cos some old ones are not locked but some are and some new ones rant and some are so there doesn't seem to be any consistency into why some are locked and some aren't.

I've changed my Itunes import properties to record to MP3 at highest quality, I know it's not the best option in terms of quality, but for everyday use it makes it easier, especially for either putting on a stick for the car or Ipod..... My old Creative Zen was far superior to the Ipod quality wise, but Apple seem to have cornered the market for 'on the move' music now!
 
Oh, and I don't buy my music from Apple!

I've found if your song is protected it works to burn a cd of them then reimport them as mp3 and it gets around it

I've also (just) found that to make playlists straight to the memory stick (quick and dirty, but it worked for me!) :-
Windows 7 with up to date Media Player etc.
Open Windows Media Player - ensure the 'Play' option is in the right hand pane
Open your memory stick (my computer/windows explorer) to where the track you want to add to the playlist is stored
Drag the track (from 'my computer'/explorer window) to WMP's 'play' pane
back to my computer/win exp and open next track folder and drag to WMP 'play' pane again
etc etc till you've finished
In WMP 'play' pane, click on 'untitled list', name the playlist, hit return
The new playlist appears in the library list on left
Click on that playlist which puts it to the top of WMP, right click/file/'save now playing list as....'
Explore to your memory stick and save it in the root directory/folder.

Best then to open the saved playlist in 'Notepad' and ensure it's saved any 'weird' characters properly (if not then just edit the file and change the character and re-save)

A bit of a palaver but it can't be done in WMP as it's on a removable media and it just wont 'av it!

R510 very annoying using ipod.  If you record a playlist it plays a mix of all music rather than an album in order.  If you choose album - it will only play that album and at the end will not proceed automatically on to the next album.  You have to press the folder icon on top right hand side of screen and wade through about 10 menus - impossible while driving.  Much better to use usb stick or sd card - that way you can scroll forward through different albums/tracks using the steering wheel buttons. 

From itunes you need to convert to mp3 files before adding to any device.

you need to convert them to mp3 by making a duplicate. you need to change from AAC or m4a to mp3 in the iTunes settings. the rcd510 won't play iTunes files.

The RCD510 plays AAC files fine.

Somewhat all depends on what your Itunes 'Import Settings' are set to, could be any of the following :-

AAC
AIFF
Apple Lossless
MP3
WAV

Also (I think) some tunes bought from the Itunes store are encoded as AAC (.m4a), but are protected (unlike the itunes 'import setting' of AAC) and therefore unable to be played on other equipment unless the DRM/FairPlay protection is somehow removed i.e. writing the file to a CD and re-saving the CD as mp3 as Ken has found.

So files Imported as AAC should play no problem, but files Bought from Itunes as AAC would need protection removal first 

That's why me import settings are set at 'Highest Quality MP3' and I don't buy from Apple
