LED Interior Lights
« on: 17 January 2012, 23:11 »
Hi all,

I haven't got my GTI yet, it's got a build week 6 which has now been confirmed, so looking at delivery beginning of March (for 12 plate) assuming the weather is okay for the boats. However, I am looking into which bulbs I will need to convert the interior to LED as I previously had this on my A3 and it was great.

I believe I need 2 x 37mm festoon for the vanity lights, 1 (or possibly 2) x 43mm festoon for boot (and possibly glove box) and the rest are 501's (w5w). I've got the 37mm and 43mm festoons from the A3. I also have plenty 501's, these ones in fact http://www.ultraleds.co.uk/501194t10-mini-light-tower-leds-xenon-white-bulb-p-1545.html

Could someone please confirm which bulb is used for the glove box?

The 501's which I have are around 3cm in length whereas standard 501 bulbs are around 2cm in length. I plan on fitting these to the footwell and front and rear interior lights (I don't think I've missed any?). Could someone please check to see if there would be enough room to fit a 3mm bulb rather than the standard 2cm bulb? I would really appreciate it, as if they are too big I can order some smaller ones.

With the A3, you would get a bulb warning for interior lights, I don't think this is the case with the Golf (I hope not, what a useless feature for interior lights!). I would also like to know if anyone has done this already, and if so, do your LED's go out completely when they should. The reason I ask is because I fitted LED's to a Vauxhall many years ago and they stayed on very dim. I expect this may have been due to Vauxhall's wiring/design though. If they do stay on a little, I will get some resistors.

Cheers,
Scott

I would be very interested to know a list of bulbs required too. Want to get into a LED light too. If we can get a list of bulbs required it be great. and if anyone know if there be a error message on the dash too if I swap out all to LED

you will need to get can-bus leds to stop and warning etc as they use less power

Are you sure? I was under the impression Golf's don't monitor interior bulbs, well, I've heard they might be monitored but a bulb warning light isn't displayed, which is ok as far as I'm concerned.

I soldered resistors in my A3 to avoid this problem.

It's a bit pointless really isn't it lol. I wonder if the local dealer would mind me pulling their cars apart on the weekend.......

Cheers, let me know if you reckon there's enough room for 3cm 501's (rather than standard approx 2cm bulbs) if not I'll have to get some smaller ones!
