Mark3 GTI 16V - Oil leak :(
« on: 16 May 2005, 13:09 »
Guys can anyone gine me some advice on this one please..

I going to be selling my golf 16v in the next month or so but it's had an oil leak for the past 6months and my mechanic reckons its not worth fixing for the age of the car etc. It doesn't leak much oil but obviously over the past few oil has built up around the engine & it looks worse than it is. I'm concerned about selling the car with this fault, what do you think ?
Apart from this the car is great!

Cheers.

Just get the engine steam cleaned before you part with it! Gets rid of all the sh1te and make the car look as though its been loved and well maintained for years.

not expensive (should get it done for around £40) and about 99.9% of garages do it to us so dont feel guilty about it!!!!

Also in my experience all cars have some sort of oil leak comming fom somewhere, trying to trace it is the problem. Dont worry about it unless its p1shing out oil.

My drive's wrecked from a 'tiny' oil drip, (about once a day)

Replaced rocker cover gaskets and leak aint coming from there! My dad ensured me it wasn't the sump like I thought, but at the top it always leaked from - He was wrong!

Best have a good look where its coming from at the weekend.

Hi Splinter thats sounds just like me leak mate! it leave a patch of oil about the size of a five pence piece every day.. Its been driving me nuts so have booked it in to be looked at on Wednesday this week at local garage, as really not happy about selling with leak after all. Did you have any luck in finding where yours is leaking from? mine is coming from the font low engine area, not the sump but not sure where exactly..   Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!     can anyone suggest what it might be?

Mine could be the same place actually. It looks to be above the sump anyway.

I've been doing some bodywork painting at the weekend so not had chance to look. Its actually over a pit in my dads garage at the moment, so tonight (if I get chance) I'll wipe it all down, run the engine warm and see if I can see where its coming from. Oil's covered everywhere over the period a few months, but I suppose its not always a bad thing as it keeps the rust away!

Is it leaking from the oil filiter ?

Check that you have a gasket on the filter .
