engine conversion gearbox question
« on: 16 January 2012, 20:11 »
whilst waiting to for my old man to finish with the garage so i can get my hands on my mk1 , ive been passing the time looking for bits and bobs to buy for it and have now decided im not going to rush it and get everything done at the same time (re-spray, sort roof out, interior and engine conversn), im stil un-decided  :undecided: between 20v turbo or vr6 it will proberbly come down to what money i have at that stage but my question is can i use my standard gearbox and flywheel on either of the earlyer mentioned engines? as there are quite a few autos about going fairly cheap

thanks in advance

Not really, VR6 needs a Vr box, 1.8t is better with a 16v box, a 1.8t is a better bet in a mk1.

Mk1 does not have a subframe, engine mounts to the chassis rails, front crossmember plus one mount on the rear.

Yes, very simple to swap back, 1.8t was never made with an auto however.
