Tar Spots

I'm ashamed to say that yesterday was the first time I've cleaned my car in about 6 weeks  :shocked:
I can make all the excuses about it being Christmas, and being away on holiday etc... but I'm just a bad owner!!

Anyway - yesterday I spent a while cleaning the wheels, and then the car... but when cleaning I noticed there were thousands of tar spots.  Most of them were just tiny dots, but there were some massive ones.  The majority were on the sides of the car and came as high up as the windows.  There were also a lot on the rear bumper / boot lid.

I dried the car off - and then got out some Autoglym intensive tar remover.  I spent the next 2 hours on my knees rubbing off each and individual tar spot in the -3 temperatures.
Apart from my Fiesta when I was 17, this is the first 'light' coloured car I've owned - so I'm not used to seeing the tar spots.  I had the car last winter too, but hardly got any tar spots then.

I'm seriously considering a set of front mud flaps for the few months a year I have on my winter wheels... but I don't know if they'll fit because of the sideskirts?  I know they'll look sh1t, but at the end of the day the car looks sh1t just now anyway as it has winter wheels on!  The front ones are fairly discreet anyway - and could save a lot of scrubbing!
I guess my dealer is the best person to ask as to whether they'll fit an R or not?

Autosmart Tardis is brilliant for tar spray it on leave for a bit and wipe ,wash the tar off ,
It may take any polish off though but its easy to pollish again

i had these spots on mine despite having had a ton of wax on the car

i polished it off then started again and its been fine since using mess ultimate wax.


the mud flaps will definitely keep the crap off the sides of the cars

I use NIELSEN products and find the better and cheaper than autosmart.
P3 eps where bouts in Bonnie Scotland are you from?

I use Dodo Juice Tarmalade and I'm not at all impressed with it.

I might give Tardis a try next.

 Am on the same boat as you Peter, 1st light coloured car and the tar spots are a pain in the arse! Done mine today with AG tar remover and it worked a treat  :smiley:

Sprayed on for 5 mins





Rubbed in with soft sash tool



Washed off

just have to wax it gain now then!


mines been fine for the past 3 washes since i polished the old wax off and switched to a different type of wax. all the black spots just slide straight off!



snow foamed the cars for the first time today (after having to first defrost my hose pipes and garden tap! what a PITA). the snow foam is good as loosening all these little spots of dirt before washing and getting under that car and wheel arches
