1.8t ftw, best all round choice, how the hell something with 115bhp could ever be badged as a GTI I will never know.

1.8T all the way, if you can get an AGU, less things to go wrong and don't come with lipstick and traction control mostly  :smug:

Less things to go wrong, I always get AUM boys coming to me to help in some way or form  Plus all the AUM boys do is end up building their engines into AGU's, oh wait n249 failed, lets remove this, SAI failed, lets bypass this, oh lets get rid of the n112 etc.... so they end up with an AGU setup. Only downside with AGU is no VVT and the piss poor k03 turbo, why vw gave us this cr@p I do not know.

Much easier & cheaper to delete SAI & n249/112 valves than to add a ko3s

I dunno why people are saying the 2 litre is unreliable, it's not very quick and perhaps it shouldn't really have a GTI badge but there's no reliability issues. If you want speed it's got to be a 1.8t but for a reliable run around with the all the GTI trim there's nothing wring with a 2 litre. Also this myth about oil consumption I have had mine for 3 years and it hasn't needed any extra oil outside of yearly oil changes. People on here have this thing about the 2 litre being the work of satan i wonder how many people who say to avoid it have actually driven one.

I have driven them test drove before i got the 1.8T - and a friend of mine had one which i also have driven.

Most 2.0 8v engines use oil it is no myth - http://uk-mkivs.net/forums/p/57513/435471.aspx

http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthread.php?1719309-Jetta-s-Burning-Oil

have a search on here too.

Its not just the speed though is it - a 1.8 NON turbo is better on fuel and drives much better than a 2.0

1.8 with 125bhp
 or

2.0 with 115bhp worse on fuel, use oil, slower, has old engine technology comes with all the other mk4 faults its a no brainer really.

All of that said its not the worst car in the world far from it  As a cruiser it does the job ok.

I've read about the oil consumption but I have never experienced it, yet. Fuel consumption, I usually get 30 mpg plus. Like you said the car is a good cruiser, I have no complaints as long as you know what you are buying.

This is not an attack on the 2.0 but the thread is asking which engine to buy - i cannot find any reasons why you would buy a 2.0 over the other engine choices.

If you have a 2.0 and it does what you want / need then thats cool :afro:

modded 1.8t is expensive on insurance tho. 2.0 is cheap.
