Exhaust paste

I think I heard something about exhaust paste used when joining exhaust pipes...Is this a must? If so do I just smear loads of it round the pipe end and shove it into the join?

Usually you need it.  Sometimes you get lucky and it doesnt blow but rare.

Like you said....cover it, let it dry for 20mins or so, then run engine at idle to finish it off....dont rev or it will just blow out.

Do not use it on the main joint, just use a little around where it connects to the front pipe.

So if im using a gasket would I still need the paste as well?

Should not use it in front of the cat, but I think this more to with excess paste getting down into the monolith or on the sensors.

I just 'threw' my decat pipe in, used it where it connects to the rest of the exhaust (150PD BTW), left it for 20+ minutes with engine off, and just switched engine off after 20 or so minutes with engine at idle, should this of 'set' it? Will the cold outside temp affect it? Cheers

Correct plus exhaust paste does not like excessive heat.

Ive used wurth RTV super slicone before as a substitute for the paste (had none) with great results good for 260 degrees so ok for the last half.
