Slow down

I've noticed that since January the forum seems to slow down quite a bit, sometimes taking a minute or two for pages to open. Getting a lot more connection errors as well
Anyone else finding this, or is it just me?

Connection Problems
Sorry, SMF was unable to connect to the database. This may be caused by the server being busy. Please try again later.

Server configuration. Unfortunately you don't easily just buy a server pre-configured to run blazingly fast as a forum.
Work is in progress and has been since I moved the site at the start of the month.
