Ok, I'm going to get technical now, the OE decal that is applied before the body side moulding is fitted, fits over the holes that are punched out in the panel to take the moulding. On a 3door car, the decal came from factory in 3 sections per side, ie front wing, door, and rear 1/4 panel...
The vinyl was in fact, was white in colour, the black and red were then printed on... That's why when you see an old decal, it usually has white patches and edges where the print has been rubbed away by cleaning and polishing over the years
I've fitted loads of these over the years, and cannot recall anything with an aluminium backing..
Best way out, if you can't get hold of OE, is to get hold of some black 50mm satin black tape, and some satin red tape to duplicate the old..

Im thinking that, that trim is OEM, but not VW! Im sure I can remember fitting that stuff to something in the 90s, but for the life of me, I cant remember exactly what... but Im sure that it was fitted GT versions of something as a bumper trim..... I'll sleep on it
As the pic shows, It should actually be black tape, with a printed red line, Why not get some 30mm matt black tape, and finish it with 10mm  matt red... Will look proper OE then

it is oem, you got both the raised style as you have and the flat sticker type as in the link. I can get you part numbers but wont be much use to you i expect as discontinued anyway

In the original post on this thread, "Dilbert" is clearly describing a Decal that fits under the moulding, and not a separate moulding that fits above the body side moulding...

I'd forgotten that there were both types and both OEM until I dug up my old thread.... I've only had one pre 88 spec GTI and mine had the above strip and one door had a made up trim tape decal....

I'm not convinced that those mouldings are a factory item, they look after market to me!

From memory, earlier cars (with quarter light doors) had a black mouldings that were approximately 2 inch deep, but the upper edge of the moulding itself was red in colour... so, no decal, or moulding!!  it was an integral part, and again, from memory, these mouldings were fixed to the car with double sided tape, as the earlier doors had no holes for clips...

You mean these.....

I have also seen a small all rubber trim 55mm but it don't join up at the arches and looks silly - I would still have the holes to sort then...

Correct, so those, and this below, are the only 2 types of moulding, and decal combination that were fitted to the very early and slightly later, small bumpered GTI's.. I'm now also now convinced that those foil backed moluldings are not VW items at all

My post referred to the vinyl decal that sits under the moulding on my car. Seems the earlier cars were different.

Foil backed mouldings are VW and came in three and five door versions, i've seen plenty around and our '88 model has them.  Most, if not all, are probably obsolete now.  The vinyl version as fitted to my '89 valver seems to have been fitted for a fairly short time and are difficult to get hold of all pieces now.
