New MOT Test Reg's That May Interest or Scare Some Of You.....

This covers New MOT regulations that have come into force on the 1st of Jan 2012...

It also covers one of my pet Hates which is HID's on Cars like MK2's..... 

They will be a failure unless you have Headlamp washers - Some are also suggesting that they could be a failure even without washers due to them being inappropriate for the standard lamps on a MK2.....

HID's do look crap on old motors though and need to be rhd projectors headlights.

My Tester is great just looks it over - quick brake test and once over (with me helping him) and it's a pass!!!

The way I read it is that they will only be a failure if washers and/or self-levelling are fitted but are faulty, not that they have to be present

If you have HID's You MUST have washers - Just like the rest of Europe and they have to work...

Aside from posting in here about something which has been discussed several times on other sections of this forum, I still think this is mostly nonsense, in a couple of respects:

1. HIDs must be fitted in units designed for use with HIDs, with the unit E-marked as such
2. the washers and SELF (as in automatic) levelling functions are specified in UK law, not EU law.  As such (as with most MOT items) they only have to work if they are fitted.  EU law overrides the UK legislation on this and it does not specify washers and levelling.

Oh and people running HIDs in units designed for a bulb are a*seholes.
