re boring
« on: 14 May 2005, 15:26 »
woo hoo back online again at last

Can anyone tell me what exactly is involved in boring out a 1.8L 8v to 2.0L (MK1 engine)???  I have access to a machine shop but I have a feeling its a bit more involved than i first thought (ain't that always the way)

Cheers

i'm no expert but i should think a capacity increase that big might involve a new crankshaft with a longer throw. :undecided:

exactly that, you need new 83.5mm pistons and a crank with a 95.5 throw i think..

yeah, thats true. when i had my rover 216si I went and spoke to a respected tuner called mike satur and he same the same thing. 1.6 is better to tune than the 1.8 cos the throws much shorter and it revs like a bast*rd.

yeah cos on vw the 1.6 and 1.8 engines all use the same block but they get different displacement thru crank variations

Cheers for all the info troops!

Spoke to a few people and I am gonna need a new crank, think id got the wrong end of the stuck! Benn talking throttle bodies with lots of people as well, it's gettin expensive now but i think it's gonna be worth it in the long run. Seems as though i won't have the car on the road till well into next year but what can you do?!!
