oil cap gunk question
« on: 07 January 2012, 21:25 »
hello to all you vw golf gti owners

im new to the forum after buying my 1st mk4 gti 2.0 8v, now i bought the car on thursday past, tidy motor with 115,000 on the clock backed up with a full service history, the last basic service carried out last week ie fluid and filter change and safety check. was checking the oil today and noticed the white gunk on the oil cap and a very light film were u put the oil in, now the water resivour is fine on the max mark with new winter coolant in it with no signs of oil, the car isnt over heating i took it a good run over the tt course here on the isle of man and the temp gauge stayed at 90 or below. is this a common thing on these cars or could it be the head? i went to the garage where it was serviced and asked him wat the oil that was changed was like and he said it was burnt, would he of noticed it if he done the service by the fulids he changed?

thanks guys for any help

May be worth getting a compression test done, or a sniff test on the expansion tank. Could just be from a lot of short journeys but keep an eye on it. Garage may not have noticed if it was only a light film on filler cap.

being on the isle of man here the car would be lucky if it does over 20 miles a day, will keep an eye on it any way, just hopin its condensation.

cleaned it and took it for a good long drive, as you look it to the engine there is a small film of white on the sides were the oil goes in but nothin major, the oil cap was clear, the dip stick is just showing clean oil and there is no oil in the water resivouir. took a while to get to 90 degrees but when it got there it never went over, just dropped slightly as i took it a fast lap home over the mountain as it was quiet cold and windy up there. cabin fan is blown hot  air to
