New N/S drive shaft instead of CV Boots
« on: 05 January 2012, 16:08 »
Hi all, having a bit of trouble. Basically I need a new near side inner and outer cv boot, a garage quoted me 152 for 90mins labour the 1 boot, as I already have one of them, and then suspension/tracking re alignment.

1 does that sound about right?

2 is the suspension re alignment required? I do see what you would need to change with the suspension etc...

Thanks

sounds ok

the realignment is needed any time you unbolt hubs/wishbones etc, as things dont necesarily bolt up in exactly the same place. Some allow for adjustment, and this all needs reset to ensure tracking and camber are correct. Else it can drive a bit wonky!

I guess other people will have different opinions on pricing. A friend of mine says that is steep.

Any one had any history with these? ^^ I'm not pinning my hopes on it

Could I just buy a new a drive shaft and fit this instead of changing both of the gators? I reckon I could also fit this on my drive as I would not need a gator stretcher?

Good idea or a cheap ebay item?

you just pull the ball joint out the hub,  it'll relocate exactly wher eit was so no need to realing, unless its knackerd and you end up changing it.

drive shaft comes out easy enough,  inner cv off,  slide the outer cv boot down the shaft from that end,  new inner cvboot refit inner cv
all the VW's have gone bar 1.

Easier and cheaper to just change the whole shaft and joints for a J&R one. I got one on my car and its been great for 10k and worked out cheaper than buying inner and outer boot kits from vw.

Avoid cheaper ones which are more of a hard plastic as they split quickly (especially if your lowered)

Ill never change a boot on my car (done 4 vw ones in 3 1/2 years)
If any more split am just buying a complete one from J&R
I often wonder why people never expect sarcastic comments from me - they're the only reason I speak...

Cheers Steve, they are on ebay for £45 delivered, I will be considering this for sure.
