Just bought 1990 cab
« on: 13 May 2005, 21:19 »
Hi there, new to the forum and new to Golfs, having always been into Italian cars!  I've just bought a LHD GTI cab for my girlfriend and have a couple of questions about it.  Firstly it seems to be a little sluggish and probably could do with a service.  I've had the cambelt changed already as it was looking pretty old, but I just wondered if there were any specialists/enthusiasts around the Milton Keynes area where I could take it.

Secondly there's something a bit funny with the suspension - occasionally when going over a bump there's a clonking at the back and the car kinda shakes from side to side for a bit.  Any ideas?  Apart from that it's a great car in really nice condition.

Any advice gratefully received!

Hi Adamj

First of all welcome to the forum - there are alot of cab owners in this club so I am sure we can help you out on your questions.

Regarding servicing in the Milton Keynes area - I can't help there as I live in South West London area. On the clonking noise - it could be a few factors.

1. Check in the boot area where your spare wheel is kept that there is no parts kicking around - this can make funny noises that seems like it's coming from somewhere in the back area of your car.
2. Check make sure your exhaust isn't knocking around - the rubbers are known to give way - this will cause the exhaust to move and hit the under the car.
3. When I first got my old skool cab - the exhaust wasn't put on properly and it made clonking noise when ever I went over anything not smooth on the road - so might be an idea to get that checked.
4. May be rear suspension - check the top mounts from the boot area - that everything is tightly done up - worth getting it checked as my rear suspension top rubbers where shoot and it affected the whole driving experience - which gave me a shaking move when going round corners.

I can't think of anything else.

yes I can - worst situation - I hope this isn't it - the car may have had a rear hit in the past and thus the car isn't straight anymore.

I'm sure other people will provides idea's as well to help you.
