EGR delete worth it?
« on: 04 January 2012, 15:01 »
Hello

Firstly, are they worth it in gains?

Also what about MOT emissions test (UK)?

Lastly, insurance companies...they probably add an extra premium?

Would I be better off blocking the end of the EGR?

Thanks!!

After fitting one to a 150PD I think I would of rather just cleaned my mani fold and EGR valve and left it at that. Some people say so, other say no. When you remove it you can get rid of a lot of vacuum hoses which makes your engine look tidier...that's about it I think  :undecided:

The T4 TDI boys seem to swear by them.

As the EGR is vomiting your already burnt exhaust gases back into the inlet tract deleting it is unlikely to be a bad thing - they're there to improve emissions.

The big thing, as alluded to by Scarr is that it stops sh*t going back through your inlet manifold.  When you go to delete your EGR you will probably find it's all furred up with soot.  Deleting this will have a positive impact!
Just because you're offended doesn't make you right.

I could always clean and keep the EGR intact and block off the vac lines to it?

That way insurance wont be any difference, it can be reversed for MOT and theres no crap going back in?

Either leave it stock, or blank it off.  No EGR shouldn't fail MOT.

Whats your view on blocking off the vac line to and from it? This I have heard in essence stops exhaust gas being introduced

I think that's a pretty pointless half-way house and likely to possibly wind up half-way open and leaking gases, robbing power and fluffing up the inlet.

In short: don't do it.

+1.

Either get rid totally or leave it as.

When I deleted the EGR on my PD130 I noticed an immediate difference and the car pulled a lot harder.

Also passed MOT's without issue (even with a de-cat) because derv's are only smoke tested. Older ones like the PD130 anyway.

Are there any downsides? Engine run-off sounds serious!

What have you done with the vacuum leads? I've got my EGR off today to clean and its quite a ballache! I don't fancy doing it again really lol
