power steering
« on: 13 May 2005, 16:53 »
had the tracking done the other day and noticed this morning that on full clockwise lock the steering weighs up and doesn't seem to reach full lock. are the two things connected do you think? Also had to change CV boot cos the little f*ckwit who did the tracking burned the other one with a blow torch!

i dont think that the tracking has anything to do with the full lock on the steering!

it just alines the wheels up so when you drive with your wheel straight your wheels are inline!

the only thing by which it could affect the steering is if they'd done too much toe in toe out..

if he'd not alined the left wheel up right and give it too much toe out the inside of the tyre would wear!
and depending on how much he'd toed it out by on left down lock the tyre would rub against the inside on the front wheel arch at the back!!

i'm not sure what you mean by weighs up? are you saying it gets harder to move the wheel!

i know exactly what this is it is the steering gear bellows that attach to the tie rods one end is fixed to the tie rod and on end is fixed to the steering rack, when a monkey does the tracking they turn the tierod and it turns the bellow, but the other end of the bellow doesnt move so it twists it then gets fouled in the steering rack when the rack and pinion are exposed, get under the car and have a lock and you will see what i mean. follow the tie rod end back to find it. you will need new ones by the way as the rack does a good job of chewing them up

Spot on mate! cheers. but theres more. The little tw*t managed to snap the end off the rack aswell! just been in and made a huge fuss in front of a load of customers so now they're repalcing both cv boots, the streering rack and bellows and re-doing all the geometry. Not very happy having them near it but we'll see.

atleast they doing something :D probably hoping youll go back the idiot at kwikfit wouldnt do my tracking cause the steering wheel wasnt on straight he insisted it couldnt be done cause both wheels where facing left when the steering wheel was straight. i booked it into a little garage up the road from me and they straightened the steering wheel and did the tracking all for £25.

i assume that only a GTI rack will fit? I'm just slightly concerned that they're gonna try to save as much money as poss when fixing their cock up by fitting a cheaper one.
