Just went through the setup process, takes you to O2 website and a "File not found" message   I'll visit the Apple shop at the weekend, and speak to the same guy, he's never let me down yet, but 95% sure he said it was possible through O2... we'll see!
On the other hand, its no big deal either way, my Phone contract is up in the next couple of months, so can sort with another SIM deal, or a new IPhone on a different network.

Let me know how you get on with it, I currently have to use my MacBook Pro to get my Xbox 360 onto Xbox Live, would be interesting to see if my iPad could do the same as it gets the same signal strength as my MacBook.

When you're out and about, and have no wifi connection, you can set up your iPhone to act as a modem, your iPad can then connect to it, so no need for another 3G sim or tariff

you don't have to change to them  Plenty of phones do this already (and have done for years) or you can buy a MiFi and stick a PAYG sim with a data allowance in it or pay a contract from 3 or Vodafone for similar but dedicated MiFi device  My outlaws have a MiFi with PAYG Sim and use it when out and about, lasts him months before topping up again and he uses it with his iPad and iPod touch, he was gutted when I pointed out his Desire S could do that already

So if you had an iPhone bought from an Apple store would it work or would the iPhone download the carrier settings and disable that function? :undecided:

Correct :)

Doesn't bother me I use PDAnet.

I believe you can do it on O2, but you need to download the update from the o2 website first before you get the option under settings, general, network (i think).

i had the same issue on my iphone 4,note that i am with o2.the option to tethering was availible on my phone but it kept saying to get activated and follow a link,i got fed up and went to a o2 store, they told me that my current tarrif wont allow me to do tethering as it was not on the correct tarrif and should change to the iphone tarrif.it cost me about £4 less a month for the new tarrif with my minutes and text and data useage remaining the same.i think it was 24 or 12 hours later for it to get activated and presto, all is good.i do bring my ipad to work on weekends as i have the 64 gb wifi version and use the iphone as a modem (tethering) with no issues at all.hope this helps

ps.also make sure you down load the latest software from itunes and that.
