As a 1992 year car, it would be classed as a 'run out model', so they tend to be well specced with the big bumpers.
As for the gear box, a GTi of this age would normally have a 5 speed box, with the low ratios specific to the 8v GTi. Goodness knows if it could have come from the factory with a 4 speed at a special request, dont know if even the 1.3 engine came with 4 speed in the 90's?
Regardless, I would be surprised if it was an insurance issue, since a 5 speed gearbox is standard to GTi cars.
