Hi folks,

Having replaced my alternator for a completely refurbished one, our 8v has developed a problem with maintaining tickover.  It has also decided that about 30% of the time - when pulling away from a standing start - to 'kangaroo' until it is given the beans.  Once it is up to motorway speeds there are no issues with performance.

We have only just had the car which has been standing for long while (over 12 months).  Of course we expect to have some teething problems while we discover exactly what being left stood for so long has done to it.

It has new H/T leads, plugs, distributor cap, rotor arm etc....and ran a treat until I fired it up after fitting this alternator.

A phone call to a pal who is much handier than me, has left me wondering if the alternator may have incorrect polarity somewhere internally.  This is something which he said could be tested by the engine being ran while the alternator is disconnected.

This same pal knew the previous owner of the car, and told me that she bought it with a 4 speed gearbox, which she had changed for a 5 speed.  My pal suggested that it left the factory as a 4 speed.  His reason for mentioning this was insurance.  He said I would need to tell my insurers that it is non-standard.  Is there any way I can find out for sure if it was originally 4 or 5 speed ?  It seems a little far fetched to me that VW were still selling 4 speed Gti's registered as late as August 92 ?

I keep hearing Golfs referred to as 'run out models'.  Can anyone tell me more about what defines a Golf as 'run out' please ?

Im sorry to go on.  I am not new to old VW's.... I have had two Mark 1 golfs, a Santana, a Mark 1 two door Jetta, three Passats, two Bay window campers, a Polo estate.  This however is our first Mark 2 and first Gti.

Hope someone can help with some of my issues as we are keen to eliminate these problems (which we expected to a degree) and get on with enjoying our White, 2 door, 8v Gti.

Regards.

Check the earth straps on the gearbox, Bonnet and one other (can't remember where it is)... Cam cover is the one!!

also re-check the alternator wires and make sure they are all nice and clean, tight etc...

Blue Temp Sender might need replacing, seen as it been sat for a while... http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=216745.0

Could also be the Idle Valve...

Cheers mate !

Had a good look at that link, and another one I found.  http://bombercountydubs.makeforum.co.uk/t209-how-to-set-up-your-digifant-8v-gti

That blue temp sensor sounds like the culprit to me.  When we initially collected the car, the coolant light was flashing on the dash although it had plenty of water.  I am wondering if it is a job I can manage easily myself ?

They dont seem to pricey either from what I gather.

Run Out Model??

Last 1991/1992 cars with 16V bits like smoked rear lights and either Rainbow or 5 red stripe interior...

Basically VW used up all the left over 16V parts on standard 8V models...
