Relay problem in 97 Mk3?
« on: 13 May 2005, 15:52 »
I'm having a problem in a Mk3 97 GTI 2.0 Golf whereby the last 3 times I have made a journey in the car the engine dies after about 10 minutes from it's initial start.

It only occurs 10mins or so after the initial start and anything from 10 secs to 10 mins after cut out, the ignition key will start the engine again after a retry and the car will be fine for the whole journey (i.e. it is not an intermittent problem it only happens once per use of the car)

In fact the 2nd time this occurred I preceded to drive from Scotland to London with no further problem only for the same problem to reoccur the day (10mins or so after driving from cold).

That's the problem in a nutshell but now, after going on holiday for 2 weeks & getting back the car's dead as a dodo (bettery I guess) - perhaps related to the problem above??

Any ideas? I'd like to have a feel for people's thoughts so the garage doesn't fleece me!

Leading guesses from other people: AutoChoke, Fuel Pump Relay

Thanks!

Hello there.

Yep i have been to hell and back with my P REG 8V allmost changing every relay have had new throttle body, distributor, changed fuel, ecu relay it finally gave up one time when it was at the garage it wouldent start it was turning over. The garage changed the relay on the ECU and it was running alote better it was the 12v feed relay playing up so the engine wasisent getting its feed all the time so it would stall. It waisent all the time like you say so it sounds exactly like mine all sorted now. Best of luck mate.
