sorry about this but i need your help
the wife's picasso petrol i  know  i know but it stops her using my golf thing is only used to move kids around and those shopping trips you no the ones when you come back and some thing has run there shopping trolley down your car 

the help i need is this car broke down rac come out tell her the aux belt has frayed and got a bit on the cam belt which has jumped the killed the motor
the belt was renew when we got it last september 2010 since from then to now the car has only done 6k so should the belt last a lot longer or is it normal.
i spoke to a friend mechanic and he said they always fit new aux belt when they do cam belt as they only cost about £20 or so and due to the high price of doing the cam beltit makes sense to do it.
do you think i could make a claim against garage or has it been to long
sorry again about the question but it ruined new years eve

I'd definatly be going the garage and asking questions if car has done only 6k and 'new' belts have snapped!

It is not normal to replace the aux belt at the same time as the cam belt unless it is badly worn, I doubt you will get anywhere with the garage however 6k is not a lot of miles but it is a long time ago that the work was carried out.

Is it the 1.6 or a 1.8 16v

when i bought the car part of the deal was for them to fit a new belt as there was no history of the car having it done

At our garage we always fit new aux belts simple fact that your taking the old one off anyway, before you go to the garage check the pullys to see if the bearings have gone or seized up or if there is any sharp edges

im sure on certain citroen engines the aux tensioner goes on a slant when wearing out so even a new belt wouldn't last if the tensioner needed changing...

Correct, Yes they do slant when worn out...  and to be honest it doesnt take long for them to be worn, ive Replaced so many of these on customers cars at work (peugeot/citroen) and seen them back not long after for the same thing.
