1988 1.8 gti 8v engine upgrade.
« on: 31 December 2011, 16:22 »
Hi All.
New to this forum,
I have had my 1988 Mk2 gti 8v for about 8 years. The past two years it has been off of the road under cover. The car was fully taxed and running at the time and we took it off of the road with intentions of body work and engine bits and bobs. I was given another car to use in the meantime. However as time does, it slipped away and two years down the line no further forward.

The car starts on the button and drives ok. Was going to do a little tarting up and chuck it in for MOT to see whats what. Someone mentioned doing an engine upgrade whilst off the road as it is a little tired. My dads a mechanic and we done the head gasket a few years back, he has all the tools and knowledge. Cant be arsed to go down the putting a 16v or 2L in etc etc. Some mates have done the whole Audi turbo thing but lot of cash and messing about really.

However someone mentioned getting a bottom end 2L and chucking that on 1.8 8v for more grunt. Can you shed any light on this??? Is it worth doing??

Cheers guys.
