A number of issues with Mk4 1.8T
« on: 31 December 2011, 00:40 »
Hi all,

I'm having a number of issues with a 2002 Mk 4 1.8T that I bought about 3 weeks ago. My apologies as I'm a bit of a car retard, and barely know the basics.

Firstly, I had the Timing belt and water pump replaced and a general service given to the car pretty much as soon as i got her. She run's beautifully except for the fact I keep getting an engine light popping up, after about 3-4 miles of being reset. The fault code is a Cam Position Sensor fault. The garage couldn't figure out what was causing it until they spotted that the engine isn't the original - It's an APS (from an A3?) where it should be AUM I think. They suspect this is the source of the fault, as the VW ECU isn't getting the right signal from the Audi Sensor even though its running fine. So, does this sound plausible? If so, does anyone have any ideas of a fix? The Garage is a bit stumped I think.

Secondly, there is a slight clicking noise coming from this little black box (I've no idea what it is), between the two reservoirs on the left hand side.... Any ideas wether its an issue? I hadn't noticed it until I got the car home from the garage. I've uploaded a video too, where you can kind of make out the noise I'm talking about.

Any help is much appreciated.
Cheers
Ferg

welcome, 1st off that ticking is normal, that's your secondary air pump. not to worry

with the CSS just replace it. vw and audi shared many engine layouts, just produced them with different numbers on the block, all having a slightly different layout off ancillaries etc.

chances are by just replacing it, it will cure it. and as any good garage would do, the process of elimination, starting with the cheapest!

Switch the cam sensor to the correct one but get a genuine part if you can.

Not to worry then! I guess replacing the sensor is probably the easy thing to do - I think the garage was trying to avoid replacing it, to save the cost.

Thanks for the replies.

Did you have the fault before they did the cambelt?

Did you have the fault before they did the cambelt?

I did, one of the reasons I got the belt done, along with the fact I had no idea when it was last done. The garage found a hydraulic tensioner was broken, so replaced that too when they did the Cam Belt.

I guess you were thinking it might have been fitted incorrectly?
