GTi - I love you

My elder brother had a MkII G-plate GTi when it was still fairly new, he absolutely loved it, and since then I've always wanted one. Fulfilled almost 4 years ago now when I bought my MkV Ed30 which I still absolutely love, even after 70k miles.

I think the thing with the GTi is that it delivers a LOT more than it looks like it should. You get something like a Focus RS or whatever and it looks like it's born for the racetrack but has somehow accidently ended up on the public road.

The GTi - of any flavour - is comparatively (perhaps not completely) understated. It's no Ferrari or Audi R8 or anything but the bang for your buck is incredible.

I remember reading Jeremy Clarkson's review in the Sunday Times when the MkV first came out. He did a similar review on Top Gear. He does annoy and amuse me in roughly equal measure but when he likes a car, you know it's a good car.

He essentially said - why buy *any* other car?

The mk5 GTI is just pure class(less). :nerd:Ask any non VW fan to identify a new GTI they point out the MK5 GTI. Agree

The Mk6 seems to have no real identity, sorry   Disagree as the Mk6 is better

There's plenty of car cars faster than a MK5 GTI but not many as class free and posh.

There's not a lot of difference between the 5 and 6 looks wise, but the interior of the 6 is way better than the 5, it is extremely classy.

Perhaps in terms of overall profile, then I'd agree with you Gizzy, but in terms of actual styling, the Mk6 is certainly more 'prominent' than the Mk5. For some that makes the Mk5 more subtle, which is nice, but it also makes the Mk6 more dramatic, which is also nice.

Just shows how right VW have been with the Golf as every variation has been spot on.

Don't forget that the MKV has been around since the end of 2003 and you get used to seeing it.
