quick one - performance of 17" vs. 18" Monzas on Mk V
« on: 28 December 2011, 22:37 »
hi all, I have the 17" Monzas on my 2004 DSG GTi and am about to trade in for a newer Mk V. Ignoring which wheels look better for a sec, can anyone advise on whether there's much difference in feel / performance / comfort etc between the 17" and 18" Monzas please?

I guess driving style factors into this, so fair to say I don't do too much hooning around these days - in fact, as the missus being pregnant was what got me to buy a nice practical Golf in the first place, I've *never* done much lairy driving in it! But still, worth knowing if there's much difference.

Thanks for that. cheers.

Yes ride comfort will be slightly worse and handling will not be quite so gd with 18" alloys compared to 17's.  I think ride comfort would be the biggest difference though.  Id suggest test driving a car with 18's and see what you thiink.

To be fair though I can imagine the difference would be minimal and 18's look much better.  I plan to get 18" alloys on my next car.

17s look wack compared to 18s. but 7 may be better for ride comfort.

P.S make sure u get Monza 2s, they look far better thsan the standard Monzas

Def 18'' alloys on a mk5, 17'' rims look tiny.

Performance wise their isn't much in it, but the lower side wall on the 18" tyres would ultimately be better for handling. The only time you would notice the difference would be driving at 10/10ths though. Used both on track and you get a little more predictable and progressive breakaway grip on the 17's.
