Mk2 16v engine swap, like for like
« on: 12 May 2005, 18:11 »
I've today been offered a 16v engine and gearbox to replace my knackered unit I currecntly have in mine. What work is involved in swapping the identical units (mines currently a '90 spec unit and the replacement is from a '86 reg car, if that makes a difference).

Is it a case of unplugging all the nessercary plugs, then un-bolting my current engine and then fitting the replacement engine, bolting up and re-plugging...or does the loom need cutting etc....?

How many hours are involved from start to finish for a qualified mechanic..?

Thanks in advance for any answers....

I just been thinknig about this.....I don't think the '86 engine will have power steering where-as my current engine does. Is it easy to transplant the correct bits from my current engine to the '86 egnine so that I can have power steering...? What bits will need to be moved across..?

yeah it will be easy you will need the pump and mount and all the pipes and the pulleys off the bottom half of the engine the power sterring pump is driven off the crakshaft pulley so its a case of looking at your engine and the new one and swaping the bits round

I've bought a 2nd hand engine now which I should hopefully have delivered next week. I will use the head off this and swap it with my current head....and any other useful bits which I may need.
