Machine Polishing

Hi all. Santa gave me a Silverline polisher for Xmas. It looks pretty basic so id like to upgrade it a little.

I want the 7" meguiars pads but the backing plate is a m14 180mm fitment. The megs pads are recessed so they wont fit on my backing plate. Am i right in thinking i need a 6" backing plate? Like this

Also, after doing some research, i think megs 80# and 83# suit the condition of my paintwork. Light scratches and swirls etc.

Anyone had experience with these Silverline polishers?!

I asked this a while back mate, apparently they are decent budget machines. Great for the amount of use you would do as an enthusiast on your own/a few other friend and families cars possibly. Only downside from a slightly more expensive machine is the cable length. Yep, u need the 6" backing plate. Worth getting a few pads and backing plates if you enjoy doing it as obviously larger plates are better for the larger panels, and the smaller ones are good for bumpers and around wings etc....

Thats what an extension cord is for  . Could you recommend any polishes to start out with? I currently hand polish with Megs Ultimate Compound but i got a feeling this might be a bit to abrasive with the polisher?

Quietly sh*tting myself about using it for the first time, think i need a panel to practice on first!

DJ lime prime with a soft pad to start, then work up the pads if your feeling like you need more cut. DJ lime prime lite if you don't really need a cut as it's non abrasive. My wish list is the lime prime, CG jetseal 109, and Collinite 476s. You can get tester pots from Chris @ waxamomo, and this will give you a couple of goes on each product. If you don't particularly like something, you can then move on without having blown a fair amount as these are pretty well priced.

Cleaning your car is an expensive game, especially when you have slight ocd lol! Ive spent hundreds over the years. The jetseal would go on after the collinite right? Just have to wait for a nice day to use it all! Cheers for your help bud.

No, jetseal then the colli. Polish, seal, wax. You don't strictly need both of em, but it just gives the added protection.

i've a few polishes/paint cleansers etc you can have a try on if you need?

ive got a silverline, had if for a few years now, it does the job. i bought some megs pads and backing pad. was amazed at how well it worked. its a bit heavier than the megs machines so my arms ache after a bit so i have to rest.

ive bought a couple of products now, spent at least.. cough.. £60! Hoping the weather brightens up as my car is looking very sorry for itself! If i polish the car with the machine, could i wax by hand? I had a little go on a panel and your right, its heavy! Dont think i could do the whole car twice in one day!
