has anyone else got a stainless steel magnex exhaust? and when you accelerate around 3500rpms and 4000 does it sound like its reverberating through the whole car and coming from under the gearstick? Its not the manifold gasket and its not fluffing anywhere, and the silencers seem ok (apparently). And its backpopping a bit when changing down. I know they are supposed to be loud, but it seems to be worse. ugh, anyone want to swap for a standard gti exhaust???

And its backpopping a bit when changing down.

could be rubbing on the bottom of the gearshift box? or one of the heatshields maybe?

and as for the back popping, mine used to do that....it sounded cool!!!! it stopped when i had it tuned, so might be worth getting it timed up correctly and a quick tune up?

no, not knocking anywhere, all new rubber exhaust bits. The heat sheild(s) rattles a bit, but its not that...(i dont think anyway) even gun gummed all the joints just to be sure. what is the kindof normalish price for a tune up? i guess thats the next thing to try.

not sure of prices of tune ups, i think when i had my cam dialed in it cost me about £50? luckily now i have a friend who tunes vws so he does it for free!! what soret of condition are your engine mounts in? if there is alot of movement then it could be moving the exhaust more than it used to. get someone to sit in the car and try to pull away with the handbreak on. if it looks like the engine is trying to climb out the car your mounts are funked. other than that wouldn't know what to check as you seem to have covered most things.

i just went out to have a look, and you may be onto something there... i dont know if the engine mounts are funked yet, but im sure they arent brilliant, but the gearchange push rod (is that what its called? im just making it up now... ) is quite close to the exhaust downpipe, so perhaps its enough to reverberate, and maybe it gets closer in 4th and 5th?and reverberates more at those particular revs cos it vibrates more there? Could that be causing it together with weak engine mounts? Yesterday i noticed a very slight, and i mean slight judder co,ing through the steering wheel at speed. no-one else would notice but me probably.. My boyfriend said it might be the wheels out of balance. but its a new symptom from my wonderful car. lesson number one; never buy a car off anyone who says 'i can assure you' alot...

hey, welcome to the world of vw ownership!! in general they are great cars but you have to bear in mind most are at least 15 years old, so do need a bit of tlc. i think your best bet is to start her up and try to look for anything amiss while you rev the engine. i assume it would make the same noise but maybe not as bad as when you are driving it. i had reveberations and mine turned out to be the heat shield on the downpipe coming loose.
the gear seletor rod is fairly close so i wouldn't worry too much about that, but if your mounts are knackered your engine will move around alot more than its meant to and it could well be rubbing on the gear selector.

anyone else got any ideas?

if the wholecar vibrates in tandem with the engine speed then it'll be the exhaust rubbing somewhere. my old 16v use to do this - done my nut in cause we could never find where it was!!

yeah i got a noise like like done engine mounts and top mounts and it still does it! im on the verge of stripping the suspension and wishbones and replacing all the bushings. not amused.

in terms of bwoooaarrr pop pop i would check ignition timing and check the condition of you exhaust manifold to gasket join.

maybe its the heat sheild on the gear selector rod and the engine mounts and the timing..
what if i removed the heat sheild?
