i havent had mine go yet.. and its done 113000... i think they are reliable... but some may wear quicker than others it may also depend of the quality of belt used.....

a cheaper belt may cause more wear on the tensioner! or if the tensioners ok it could be the belt making the noise!!

if you use quality parts then they are reliable..

i've never done the belt on the vr.... is the tensioner auromatic tensioning! or do you have to set your own tension like on the mk 2 gti's!

if you havent tensioned it right the noise may be from this!!

The tensioner on my VR6 is the original one and its done 124k now!

Problem with the tensioner was when winding in the bolt to slacken the belt when i replaced the belt, it sheered the threaded lug off!   Bit of a bummer cos they cost a packet to replace. I never cause the tensioner its self is fine just a bit more fiddly to slaken the belt but that dont matter cause i replaced that already.

As for the cam chain....     VW recon it wont snap.

If it does apparantly they will replace the engine!

Is this true?  anyone tryed this guarantee ???

someone on vwvortex replaced their cam tensioner!! it was plastic and fell apart!

it made a ratteling noise!! he even had a before and after sound mp3 on there!!

i normaly go on their when i have some hard technical problem!

but i cant get on... they wont send the emails for my password!

technicaly the chain shouldnt wear out not if its coated in oil!
