Original decat downpipe
« on: 22 December 2011, 17:08 »
Hi y'all

Managed to get my hands on a original PD150 exhaust downpipe that has had the cat taken off and drilled out then welded back into place.

Few questions if I may

Will it make a massive difference to how the car responds/drive still with the factory map on it? If so what differences will I notice? I intend on going to see Rtech in the NY

How hard is it to replace that part of your exhaust? Would I need a proper ramp or is it a possible drive way jobby?

Also can some one please confirm that this should still pass an MOT as there is still a 'cat' in place?

Thanks

Even though mine was mapped I noticed it picked up a little quicker, the mid range was punchier and the top end a tiny little stronger.

If you look at my MK4 project page you'll see a load of graphs comparing CAT and DECAT runs.

Diesel's don't need a CAT to pass an MOT; just make sure it doesn't smoke excessively   Mine passed its MOT with no problems; the tester even commented on how nice the decat pipe looked

I'v heard about the spooling up quicker, my original thoughts being, that if the turbo spools up quicker will the boost tail off sooner also? So you will still get the punch of the turbo but for a shorter period lower down the rev range?

Also this won't be a decat DP like say milteks, it will be a standard DP with the cat drilled out, so there will be like a largish hole between the original diameters of the pipe and wondering if that will have a different effect compared to a pipe with a bore of standard diameter all the way down?

Also I'm sure I read, on ukmkivs perhaps, that all car after year XX must have a cat 'in place'...

There might be subtle differences between that and a proper decat due to the diameter but the difference might be negligible  :undecided:

I have a pd150 and had my cat removed and section of pipe put in it's place by powerflow, my car definately picks up better.
Also i have fitted an allard EGR delete pipe and K&N panel filter, but the most noticable difference was when i removed my intake manifold and had it cleaned out with glass bead shotblast, so it looked like brand new, because you'll not believe how bad it gets due to the nature of the way an EGR works, it must of been half it's capacity inside with all the gunk in it!
In the past i have owned plenty performance cars, the last one being a 300bhp 200sx and let me tell you, this little golf would give it a run for it's money!
My mate has a 225 TT and it can barely keep up with mine, i love it! especially when my nissan got about 15-20mpg when i drove like a granny and my golf averages 40mpg with my lead foot.

I also have EGR delete and piperx panel filter. I don't intend on fitting it until I have had my MOT in Feb. I am very much looking forward to it as I will get a custom map straight after

You sure when you say a 225TT struggles to keep up? Let me guess...he let you win
