Introduction - 1st time Gti Mk 2 8v owner.
« on: 22 December 2011, 13:55 »
Hi everyone,

My other half is now the proud owner of a White, big bumper, 8valve, 3 door Gti.

It had been stood for a good while, but with a bit of petrol - and a bit of help off of my work vehicle, fired straight up with no immediate problems, (although a little 'tappety').  It was out of MOT, but passed once the (new) battery was properly secured, and the indicator stalk was lubricated as indicating left only resulted in the lamp flickering.

As far as I can tell, the engine appears totally standard.  There is a large bore tailpipe on it, which as yet, I am unable to identify.
All light service parts did not need changing, as they all appear to have seen little use since they were last replaced.  It is our intention to get the oil changed as soon as possible - although that also appears to be very clean.

It has been fitted/retrimmed with a full leather interior, including door cards, and even has DVD monitors installed in the rear of both headreasts.  There is also a DVD player, 12 disc CD Multichanger, 12" Kicker sub - mounted in its own box, 200watt Mosfet amp, and a JVC Remote Controlled Head unit.

It sits on 15" BBS Ra alloys at the moment.

The only things that I can see which are wrong with it - the speedo cable needs reconnecting/replacing, and the coolant light flashes on the dash (although it appeared to have enough water, and did not overheat).

Hopefully, over the next few days, we will be able to spend some time giving it a proper clean, ready to be taxed as soon as the post office opens in January.

I am not sure if this is the place to mention that I only have photographs of it before any washing/polishing of the vehicle - but none of it once we have got it gleaming again....I believe a heat gun is the best method to restore the black plastic trim ?  Probably need to find a way of restoring that white paintwork too.

Insurance is already in place thanks to the very helpful James @ HIC Insurance.  I have to say, he was great to deal with, and managed to cut our previous quotes by over £500, under a 'classic car' policy.  I discovered HIC Insurance thanks to their name popping up on several forums.

Happy Christmas everyone.
