Springs for spax shocks
« on: 21 December 2011, 21:09 »
Got non adjustable spax all round and some lowering springs which came with my mk2 16v.

Far too low and far too crashy.

Was contemPlating keeping the shocks and changing springs

What's the general opinion on this and what springs can I use or should I just change whole suspension?

Am on a budget so thought money would be better spent on mk3 top mounts and springs caps (lemforder) new bumpstops and some quality springs.

Want the car lower but not crashy so I guess i would sacrifice ride height for comfort.

Firstly you need to find out what is on there at the moment, measure the arch height from hub centre and compair with std (dont know std off hand) then work from there. You have any pics?

No pics at the moment but can safely say that the car has been dropped at least 60mm.
Absolutely awful drive.

These may be down to the shocks as well but I would hazard a guess most of the bad ride is due to springs. That's why was thinking about freshening up bushes/mounts/ bumpstops and going for some quality springs.

Not sure if anything else fits the spax vsx range?

How much is your budget?

I had Boge turbo gas shocks and springs on my 16v which I estimate lowered the car -35 mm.  One spring broke so I replaced all of them with Eibach springs.  These I would say have raised the car +15 mm (so 20 ish mm from standard height).  It does mean I can get on most ramps without any scrapping.  The Eibach are a progressive rate spring so you should get the best of both worlds in comfort and handling.  They will set you back around £130.
