BAM/20vT issue and question
« on: 21 December 2011, 13:06 »
Hi Guys,

A mate at work has a BAM powered S3 and it's suffering cutting out. He took it to Audi and they have said it needs a new cam sensor which will cost £1800 fitted as it's an engine out job!!!!!!

Anyone know what this is likely to be? I've advised him to take it to a local specialist I know for a 2nd opinion as this sounds bonkers!

Nick

Cam positioning sensor by any chance??

Think for the bog standard 1.8T's they are like £30-£40!!  And they aren't an engine out job!

Drop Topher a PM as he'll know for sure :afro:

cam sensor takes 10 minutes to change, but i dont think that would cause the car to cut out. The crank sensor would.. and that takes a bit longer than 10 minutes to change. Maybe 15

not always. An early tell-tale of it failing though can be difficulty starting the engine while warm

id say more likely cranck sensor,  read the codes.

its actulay quite amazing how hard it is to stop an engine running by unplugging stuff they'll run with pritty much anyting bar the carnck sensor unplugged
all the VW's have gone bar 1.

We've had a car in that wouldn't run when warm because of the cam sensor. It was a hyundi though. Best to scan it for the codes

Right I've seen the paperwork from Audi and it states speed sensor needs replacing AND camshaft adjuster has failed. It's the camshaft adjuster that is £1800 to replace and that's with a 20% discount on the labour!!!!!!!
