Mine sits at just below the halfway mark and the oil temp usually runs between 98 - 104 in normal driving. My temp gauge went over halfway the other month and I had the thermostat changed and that's fixed it, that's the cheapest fix for your over heating, the parts about £12. As long as you are not going into the red though then you should be ok but my guess is that the thermostat needs replacing. Hope this helps.

Welcome to the site by the way.

My MK1 gti sits at about 2/3rds but doesn't overheat. This was after changing the expansion tank cap for the correct blue one. Prior to this (with a black cap) it sat at about 1/2 way on the guage. Personally, I wouldn't worry if you're not overheating.

hi, mine seems to be running hotter lately, runs at about 2/3 and the fan is always kicking in, still goes OK! Smells hot though!

not sure what colour mine is, but the previous owner said he changed the thermostat anyway.........

I feel a bit reassured any way, thanks.....

one other thing i have noticed about the car is that it sits a bit nose up. Is is normal for the rear suspension to drop over the years or is this something to be worried about too. I have contemplated replacing the front springs for some 40-50mm lowered ones to level it out?
