chipping/remapping clarification

am i right in thinking chipping involves soldering a new chip into the ecu and it will be a standard setting for all cars, eg mk3 8v, and remapping involves plugging into the serial port and basically electronically tuning your car to it's best potential? recommendations and costs appreciated

yes they solder them...... although some mk 2's had chips which you cliped in without soldering!

when they remap the ecu they put your car on the rollers and set it up how you want it.....

i dont know much about remapping i dont know if they can keep rewriting the settings ie as you do engine mods.... cams ported head etc...

Remapping is a reprogramming of the chip.

Most chips CANNOT be remapped. The only one i know is Unichips.

When I asked a guy recently about a chip, he said I could have the Unichip (ie re mapped) for £70 more than just a basic chip, but it probably wouldn't make much difference and not worth it for my car. (16V mk3)
