As much as the talk of 220hp makes me

, I still don't think it would ultimately put me off the GTI.
The GTI is no longer the premium golf, the R brand is. It now competes with the VXR/ST etc and the GTI becomes the lower sports model.
I wouldn't necessarily agree with this. I think it would be fairer to say that there are
three premium Golfs.
1. The R is the performance flagship with the most power, the best traction and the most aggressive styling.
2. The GTD is the diesel flagship with great styling, real class and solid fuel consumption.
3. The GTI is the petrol flagship in terms of refinement, class and all-round ability.
All well and good aiming it at the corsa/fiesta etc, but pricing it well above is silly.
I don't think comparing the Golf GTI to a corsa/fiesta is all well and good. That's what the polo is for. Would you compare you're S3 to a Corsa/ fiesta... I don't think so. It's not just about power, it's also about build quality, refinement, class, practicality, size, safety etc etc.
thing is while the other cars are getting bigger and fatter the golf is getting lighter so dynamically weight saving is the best way to go. if it is 70kg lighter than the current car it will make a big difference in all aspects of driving.
give me a GTI over a vxr any day of the week. ok its quick but handles like a pig and looks like a 8 year old drew it.
and i agree - as a do anything and be anything car everyone wants and can live with the GTI wins hands down. its THE hot hatch for every man. I'm sure the mk7 with be even better again.
plus i think it will come with more than a claimed 220bhp. VW aren't stupid and seem very smart at product/market placement.
70kg isn't much to shout about. I'm sure some people on this forum could lose a lot more simply by not having as many options. Although your argument is spot on. VW are looking to constantly refine the Golf model family as a whole and this can be achieved by doing more than just chucking more power out of the engines.
But it's the last part of you're comment
"VW aren't stupid and seem very smart at product/market placement." which hits the nail on the head. The problem for the GTI is not VW's capability, but the ceiling created for it in terms of performance by the R. VW wanted to save money with the Mk6 and as a result the R model was released with an older, tried and tested engine (taken straight from the S3). This created a dilemma in that the GTI would have to concede a significant power deficit compared to the R, hence the 210hp quoted figure. VW knew exactly how to market the GTI and R brands which, unfortunately for us GTI owners, left us feeling a little underpowered.
Hopefully the R will get the power it too deserves in the Mk7 (which should be over 300 at least) therefore allowing the GTI to once again bring the fight to it's own competitors from other brands (the Astra VXR, the Focus ST etc).
