Auto Bid - Golf Mark 7
« on: 18 December 2011, 20:17 »
Found this article which might be of some interest. Then again maybe it has been covered if so you have my apologies.

According to the article the GTI will gain 10 bhp which might not sound a lot however add that to 70kg knocked off the GTI weight and you are looking at a significantly increase in power and fuel saving. Weight loss will mean even better handling than the current model.

Looking at the price of the new Focus - Astra - Civic - BMW 1 It should be able to give you an idea of what the Golf will cost

Personally I have a feeling when orders are being taken I will put one in

You have to think that the GTI is loosing ground again just like the mk 3 and mk 4.
10bhp and 60kg less,  250bhp is bare minimum now for a hothatch, And the GTI falls well short

The GTI is no longer the premium golf, the R brand is. It now competes with the VXR/ST etc and the GTI becomes the lower sports model.

The GTI is being made to be on a par with corsa's and fiesta's, All the competetion gets more power. Vw always to conservative.

The important bit first: the new VXR gets a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-pot petrol engine developing 280bhp - some 40bhp over the original - and a considerable 295lb ft of torque. No performance times have been supplied, save for its 155mph top speed, but you can expect it to hit 62mph in under six seconds.

-----------
FOCUS ST NEW
Both a five-door hatchback and - more surprisingly - a five-door estate have been shown. Power comes from a 2.0-litre four-cylinder Ecoboost turbocharged petrol engine in place of the previous ST's 2.5-litre turbocharged five. Despite the loss of capacity, the new motor makes a claimed 246bhp - 24bhp more than the old car - accompanied by a fat 266lb ft of torque.

We wont know until it comes out. Autocar are never to be trusted on anything! I expect they are close though, unfortunately.

All well and good aiming it at the corsa/fiesta etc, but pricing it well above is silly.

No chance of me buying one at 220hp. That's just crap.

Vauxhall/Ford for me if I go buy a hot hatch or BMW if I go down the second hand route. 220 I'm afraid just doesn't cut it anymore.

Corsa's and fiesta's???   Ok the GTI is not the fastest hot hatch out there and it could be argued that it isn't "hot" at all when compared to the likes of the focus ST or VXR but what it is is a very competent all rounder, to compare it to quick supermini's is rediculous imo.

If all i wanted to do was drive everywhere flat out i'd buy a Focus RS and have change from what i paid for mine to fill the tank but i don't, i quite like the relatively comfortable ride and half decent fuel economy and not looking like a complete tit with bright green paint or daft chequered flag stickers.

Point is that there is a place for the GTI, that may well be behind other hot hatches but that suits me as well as lot of others out there.
Currently pootling around in our family wagen, a Tiguan SEL 😂

I'm with Jimble on this.

In reality, 220bhp ought to be enough for the majority of UK Journeys given the state of the roads and other traffic, but if it isn't, there is always Bluefin. I'd much rather be sat in a Golf just getting on the the job, than I would be in one of its "rivals" analising its dynamics in a way that an "Evo" staff writer would.
Red Mk6 gone replaced with a white Mk7 which has gone too. Green Mk2 here to stay.
