Thinking about getting one for Xmas, anyone got one? does it play all MKVs?

yes it does. it also decodes dts sound. good bit of kit

i have the Gen 1 box. does not play all formats of MKV. some times ive had to convert to mpeg in order to play a movie.

Why would he pay £50 less for 1 that doesnt play a file he needs!!!!    The WD live is amazing mate i bought it for my mum and dad simple to use If you really wanna go cheap Try the sumovision Cyclone 2 Plays everything you chuck at it is just a bit slower browsing than the WD and not as nice but is £30
