Good point, I was hoping you were online, Ive read alot of your posts n they all carry a valid bit of advice.

So in theroy if money wasnt a prob (within reason) what should I do First?

Exterior wise im going to keep it simple and tidy but I really do want a quick Golf.

your best bet is to try and source a 2.0 16v bottom end from a corrado/passat or toledo. then mate this to your 1.8 head. it is a straight swap and will up bhp & torque a fair bit.

couple this together with a decent exhaust with 4 branch manifold, and get it all set up & fuelling correctly and your probably talking around 160-165bhp. then decent cams & good headwork will probably push it out to say 180odd

electric windows where std on all 16v's apart from 1990 only when they where an option but most still have them

if your looking a 16v i would go from late 89 onwards, big bumper spec, u'll be hard pushed to find a 92 but there is still plenty of good cars about. bodywork is the main thing on them. everything else is fixed quite easily and cheaply if your will to put the work in, or at least know somebody who is willing to work on it.

big bumper spec have better brakes (256mm) as opposed to 239mm and also have better electrics.

easiest way to tell a late spec is that the hazard light button should be on the steering column shroud and not the dash!

Can i ask a question too?

So far i have the 2.0 litre bottom end - k&N pannel filter - 4 branch stainless manifold - full Stainless exhaust. What is my next step for more power while keeping the engine na? Also what do you recon is the max power out of the engine while na?

So to sum up.

Go for late '89 onwards

'90 dont have elec windows as it was an option

late spec as better brakes and better electrics

Cheers Fella, On with my 16v hunting!!!

Thanks again,

Stew.

200bhp is the magical figure everyone chases with 2.0's

your next step is getting the head done, and a nice set of cams to match

have you had yours on a rolling road in its current state of play? it'd be worth getting it checked just to see if the fuelling is good, all valvers lean out towards the top end of the power band, gettin the warm up regulator adjusted can help solve this prob

Rolling road is my plan of action after the respray is finished.

Do all cams make for a rough idle or can you opt for a mild cam and still get good gains?
