Firstly a big hello to all from a newbie , just registered 5 minutes ago and i wont hide the fact that im searching for some help . Im trying to help my brother source his gti , he currently runs a mk3 1.8 se and wants to make the step up but is clueless when it comes to cars , hence he s asked me to help .

A good friend of mine at work has an 01 mk 4 1.8 turbo with a revo remap, coilovers , rs4 alloys and full heated leather recaros . He is looking to sell but the car has been parked on his driveway for around 6 months unused, tonight he fired the car up and warmed it through , the car idles fine and apart from the brakes sounding a little rough (surface rust) all seemed ok . Now the car is currently sorn so he only drove  it up and down the cul de sac, but hes phoned me to say it doesnt seem to be boosting at all , aparently it feels flat and has no turbo surge , it is however still dumping through the blow off valve. There is no smoke to report of or rough running , he says its driving lovely just down on power .

he has agreed to tax the car so we can take it out for a good run on sat morn and see if that clears the issue , if not i would like to drive the car to my local vag specialists for a plug in diagnostic ..

My questions are ? firstly any ideas on what the problem could be ?
and secondly will i be risking any damage driving the car , assuming no engine warning lights are present ?

prior to being parked up the car had been driven back from the mot station were it had just passed its m.o.t , all being fine at that time

thanks in advance

many thanks for the responses guys , seems a very active site .  the dump valve is a hks model which will be removed anyway as my brother isnt a fan of them , the seller has not mentioned any prior running issues concerning the valve but i am now thinking i may have stated the year of the car incorrectly , i know its a 150 bhp model so it could be an earlier 1999 car
i have a feeling the car is going to be a good buy once sorted at 84000 miles what with the heated leather recaro, coilovers etc .. ive also been informed that a brand new exhaust from the cat back and 2 brand new front tyres were fitted for the m.o.t, darren the seller always buys the best examples he can find and his current cars are in great condition..

so i guess the first course of action is a diagnostic check , however Im still wondering whether or not i will cause damage to anything if i drive the car , any thoughts on this

cheers

i can only assume the road was ample in length to bring the boost on , even if only in first gear.

as far as a price , well thats all up in the air now until we resolve the current issues , he originally wanted around 2k but i think there was room for negotiation seeing as were friends , as it stands im going to collect the car on sunday and have it looked at by a local specialist. After a conversation with said specialist this morning , he thinks there maybe a slight possibility it ll sort itself after a good run , if not it may need a reset , regardless the car is booked in on wednesday .

after the diagnosis we ll discuss a price , i guess for the spec and additional mods its gotta be worth 2k all day long ??   not that i think i ll have to pay anywhere near that , im hoping around 1200 and we ll take on the repairs if needed , we ll  see .. i keep the thread updated

meanwhile many thanks for all your time guys , more comments always welcome
