Overheating
« on: 23 September 2003, 00:22 »
Took my new mk2 8v out for its first run tonight and everything was fine for about 45 mins, got on the M40 and then the water temp warning light started flashing.  The actual temp gauge was fine, the needle was in the middle.  I stopped the car and took the filler cap off and it started fizzing etc.  The engine felt hot and all the water pipes were hot, although the radiator was cold.  I dont recall hearing the fan at all.  I left it for a while and started it back up and the temp gauge went back down to the bottom, but the light started flashing about 5 minutes later (temp gauge was now in the middle).  I also noticed that the MFA was reporting the oil temp at 90 degrees C.  I had to keep stopping and starting about 6 times before I could get home.

What could this be?  Its really p!ssing me off because the car drives superbly apart from this.

Help!

Cheers

Neil

mine does the same. I ignore it now and it hasn't come on for a few days. I changed the rocket gasket (finally) last week and it hasn't come on since.

Dunno if what I just said helps. it's late :D

So yours wasnt actually overheating, even though the warning light came on?

If the oil temp reads 90 and the coolant temp gauge reads bang in the middle then i don't think your car is overheating. Sounds like some wierd electrical fault.

Golfvr6,

You are absolutely right.  When I started it from cold this morning, the warning light was still flashing, so theres obviously an electrical fault there.  What should the oil temp be roughly....?

Sorry for being thick, but I'm crap with cars!

The oil temp should be about 90-100 at operating temp (when the car is properly warmed up).

Gambit,

You may well have hit the nail on the head there.  I'll check it.

Cheers
