Hey folks!!
« on: 09 May 2005, 23:57 »
I have a couple of question's, my rev counter dies after a while or sometimes doesnt want to play at all(from start up), it has died and come back again, it's wierd.

Plus, where is the rear window heater earth bolted to, the heater dont seem to work, but I have a 12v reading from the live, I am far from a electrician and wouldnt know where to start to look, FYI the heated mirrors work, which are on the same switch.

By the way it's a 88 MK2 golf GTI 16v.

Oh one more thing, anybody know about the front seat's, they are electric Recaro's and for some unknown reason the back's move back by them selves, over time though, the passenger seat seems the worst, FYI the twiddler to move the back on both seats do move very easily.

Thanx, hope somebody can help here.

The earth connection is behind the boot carpet/card/foam on the left side, its a gread big bolt with lots of brown wires going to it :)
Check the wires going thru the rubber boot and behind the rear quater trim panel.

As for the seats, try taking the centre trim piece off the windy knob and tightening the screw.  Failing that I'm not sure!

for your rev counter check the wires which run to the ignition coil....

it will be 2 of those... you should have 4 all together 2 positive and 2 neg....

it will be theses....... i'm not sure which colours go to the rev counter...all's i know is this is where the rev counters connected to..... and i prosume your problem is here probibly loose or coroded dirty connections!

if thats ok.... then its either the connection beind the clocks or theres a break in the wires somewhere!

when electronics start to play up it can be a nightmare to fix them!!

Green and red go to the negative side of the ignition coil on a late Mk2, not sure about the mk3 tho.
I know this because I've just fitted an aftermarket kit and I had to butcher the connection!

For the rev counter, I had the exact same problem... The red wire with the black stripe (at least thats what it is on my '89 Driver) goes from the ignition coil to the rev counter. If this is getting a signal to the clocks (check with a tester), then you may have the same fault I had, a break in the circuit foil that wraps round the back of the clocks. It gives an intermittant signal to the counter itself. You could either get a new set of clocks etc or do the bodge I did. I soldered a wire between the plug (clocks side) and the plug that runs into the back of the rev counter. Be careful tho.
I removed the contact from the white plug for the relavant signal (I think its K1 or something similar) and soldered a wire to it, then did the same thing with the rev counter end by cutting out the pin that is pushed into the plug (carefully) and soldering the other end of the wire to it. Push both ends into the correct plugs and Bob's your mothers brother.
Hope that makes some sort of sense.

On a similar note, the ignition coil feed goes to both the rev counter and the oil pressure warning circuit board. Don't know what the result of having no ignition feed to that is, anyone know? I have a break somewhere before the signal is split to both....  :undecided:
