Which gearbox for better cruising/mpg on 16v gti

In these times of extortionate fuel prices, I would like to have the option of cruising in my valver rather than ragging it everywhere.

Was wondering if there is another gearbox that will fit or better 5th gear that can be used to improve mpg performance rather that acceleration.

If your a bit flush with the readies you can buy a Quaife 6 speed gearbox.

If not, iirc you can fit the 'E' gear from a Driver. Its longer than 5th.

There is a full list of gearbox codes and ratios/final drives.

Take your pick.

Yeah but even at 70, 5th seems a little short...

From a bit of searching the Gearbox can have a longer 5th gear from a TDI or VR6
I got these part numbers but you will have to confirm they will go into the 020 box
They fit the Rallye not sure on 16V gti though if its the same box which I think it is i.e casing not internals then they will fit!

The most common swap is to a vr 5th, the 16v does have a really really short final drive - still built for acceleration rather than cruising on the motorway. No idea how the Autobahn loving Germans overlooked this.

I actually have a complete vr6 highline that I'm breaking.

Is the general advise to take 5th out of vr6 and pop it into 16v?

Not as simple as popping it out! If it 'pops' chances are loads of other sh!t will pop out with it lol. There is a guide, I will try dig it out

It is the easiest one to remove because the cog is right on the end of the box!
By the way you change one gear it does overall effect the ratios of the other four

Surely that only applies if he changes the final drive.  Simply changing 5th wont affect the other gears, no?
