MK2 8v noise?????

Hi,     
My 1989 PB engine golf is making a very weird noise.  Under hard acceleration then normal driving it will intermittently make a noise like snapping twigs, loudly from the engine bay area.  I am a mechanic by trade and can't think what it can be. :rolleyes:  I have tightend all accessible nuts and bolts, inspected and replaced engine damper blocks etc.  It is not speed related, nor suspension/ direction/ engine speed.
Suspension is serviceable, brakes are mint, engine fully serviced, there are no trees, wildlife stuck under the car.  Every time I take someone out it the car to listen for it, it doesn't make a noise!!!
Please help, as this is doing my tree in, I get paid to find some barley there squeak in some old codgers car, but can I find the loudest noise in my own?!?!  :evil:NO, How does that work?

blowing zorst when u gun it then slow down u coul have a popping cracking sound from unburnt fuel??

is that what it is? its just i bought my golf with a big exhaust on it and like you say when you hammer the car then go down a gear a bit too quick it can sometimes make a popping noise- like its a rally car?
i thought it was a feature of the exhaust at first but is that what it is or is the exhaust on its way out?

wish it was, 'zorst is good, it is now making the noise ramdonly!  Bloody tipical, spend a fortune getting it running nicely, threaten to sell it and waht does it do?

Could it be an electrical spark noise? As if it is arcing on bare metal somewhere? Just a guess, cant think what else would sound like snapping twigs.

I think the exhaust popping noise is normal if you have DTM's - mine do it all the time.  The noise comes from the exhaust though so it isn't the problem you have.

Snapping twigs...could it be the tappets, cam followers, cam shaft, anything like that?

I remember my old Driver used to sound like it was making popcorn under the cam cover when I started her up.

YAHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!! & BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have found the noise, after many test drives etc, inspecting various bearings etc.  I turned out to be a tab off of the center push plate on the clutch, it had broken off of the VAG clutch!!!  One new clutch kit and bleeding knuckes later, no more craking, but a lighter wallet.
