Distributor cap
« on: 22 September 2003, 15:08 »
I cant seem to find the right cap for my Mk1, it has a mk2 1.8 16v in it.

The cap is almost against the resvoir for the brake fluid.
It has the connectors at righ angles to the cap but the one from VW / Halfords in inline!!

Please help,  i need a new one!!

Dan

you will need to know what year car the m2 engine is out of.

i went to get a rotor arm and cap today and was told i needed to get the engine no cos mine is an e reg and this when a change came in.

there are two types of rotor arm and cap that may fit your car.

if you can find out what car the m2 engine came out of you will find it a lot easier to get the correct cap.

Thanks...

Funnily enough i went to halford and got the Rotor arm which was exactly the same as i had. It was listed under Mk2 16V Gti. 86-92. The corresponding Cap was wrong though!! I checked all the caps for golfs and couldnt dind the right one..

Surely its the leads that are at right angels? Maybe its had different leads fitted due to a lack of clearance? I'm sure one of our cars has the right angle type leads fitted, but its raining at the moment and I'm not sure which one, might well be my Audi.

No the leads come straight off the Cap.

The connectors on the cap are at right angles to the body of the cap... Seen this before on Jap cars. The thing is that the rotor arm fits it correctly and the fillting to the main body of the distributor.

I know what you mean, I looked all through the dist cap listings at our local motor factors and could not find it either. I need one for my MK1 16 valve also, what I have done is removed the fluid resovoir and fitted a remote tank out of a Fiat  ::) (I know, but its all I could do at the time).
If you find a cap please let me know the part no, Steve.

Is there not enough room to fit a normal cap with right angle leads or will a normal cap not even go in? I suspect not as that would have been the easier route to go when doing the transplant.
Bare with me a mo, I think I may know someone that will know the answer to this question.
