New door membranes?
« on: 08 May 2005, 20:46 »
Am having problems with the door card not fitting properly, as the previous owner had the membranes done with non-standard parts.  Garage fitted foam ones which are quite thick and while they are nice and solid the catches for the card don't fit.

Where can I get the standard ones to change the membranes over?  Can't see them on GSFs site, or may just be a ilttle blind tonight!

you should have a plastic sheet membrane. stuck to the door and any padding should be on the door card itself. but it should be shaped to fit round anything. which bit are you after? the plastic membranes are not worth buying just get some sheet and stick it on with duct tape. as for the foam, find out where its sticking out too much and shave it off!

The plastic sheets have been replaced by this foam membrane instead- is about 2 mm thick, and this is why the cards are not a very good fit anymore.

Doing the work is not a problem as I have to replace the window mech so will be stripping them anyway, but want to get rid of the mattresses!

Might go for the home made option....

May as well be homemade ones. I am planning on the homemade approach when it stops raining. I have seen some super luxury bin bags somewhere (really thick polythene) that i may use or thinking about it i have an old camping sleeping bag thing called a bivie bag (spelling?) Thats extremely tough and very orange. . Not sure it should be mentioned to you mates though, may sound strange " forget that brand new stainless exhaust system you just installed, i just got 2 binbags and some sticky tape and re lined my doors. Only cost 10p"

As said previously the plastic sheet membranes are no longer available from VW and you have to buy the black foam roll and make your own.

The best bet is to go to a builders merchant and buy some rubble bags. cut them along two sides and open them up and you have enough to cover your door.

Also the plastic is more robust then the standard plastic offerings.
