what do people use? (windows) just downloaded the after effects trial but then realised im running 32 bit windows and cant be arsed to change it!

After Effects is not strictly for editing, it's for doing special effects with video.
You want Adobe Premiere for editing. Once you've mastered that and want to do something more challenging, then get into After Effects.

Somewhere I've got a copy of Premiere CS3, works on 32bit windows.

TBH if you're editing you'll want a 64bit OS as they are heavy on the RAM

I use a mix of the adobe apps, mainly Premiere for editing (time line) after effects for titles, cleaning up video motion tracking special effects (this is used with a mix of photoshop).

If you're an OS bigot.

Justifying spending over a grand on a Mac just so you can run Final Cut Pro is stupid.

An old CS3 version of Premiere Pro will do you fine on Windows.  I've done loads on that.

CS5.5 is a lot more stable in but it only runs in 64 bit, as already outlined.

If you just want to muck about then download the Windows Live Movie maker thing and give it a go.  The thing you need to understand about video editing is that it will p*ss your time down the drain like it's going out of fashion.

Or if you just want to learn and have a little bit of money, just Adobe Premiere Elements, the slightly cut down version and if you get version 9, it'll work on XP or on a 32bit windows.

windows movie maker if you've never done anything like it before.. to give you an idea of how to work the timeline and adding effects etc.
Sony Vegas is my preferred program.

windows live movie maker seems ok for what i need at the moment
