You will have to use the 8v clutch centre plate as the shaft is a different size, not really a problem as the disc is the same diameter. Some early 8v boxes have 90mm drive shaft flanges and the valver uses 100mm, if the flanges on the 8v box are to small just swap in the 16v ones. There is a difference in ratios between the boxes, go for a diesel one if you want tall gears and 8v gti for short ones.
Steve.

thanks for the reply, very helpful! i would like to track day the car and it's just made a nice hole in the original box, so now's the perfect time to change it. i was wondering if it would matter what year of 8v box i used and whether there's a difference between digifant and k-jetronic? also linkages, would i be ok to stick with 16v?

thanks very much for the help, russ

ive got an 8v box mated to my 16v engine. The difference between my valver and my mates (16v engine and box) is really noticeable. he really does p!ss all over me throughout the rev range. Altough i can do 100mph at just 4000 rpm, whereas a valver engine and box normally sits at around 75mph at 4000 rpm. So economy is loads better (i had over 430 miles to a tank driving less spritedly!).

I constantly want a 16v (2Y) box for my valver but realistically for everyday use an 8v box is better. However, i would suggest if you are looking to run the car on a track then use the 16v (2Y) box with an 8v 5th gear or from a diesel box. Apparently this is farily straightforward for a mechanic to do but as i have never done this before im not sure! Although, this would be an ideal box for the 16v. Alternatively, if the car is purely for the track then you can use an ultra rare mk1 4-speed box, but good luck finding one.

hope this helps a little!

thanks for the post, slightly confused though! you say that wih your 8v box you can pull 100mph at 4000rpm, so you get to a higher speed quicker? surely that means your car is quicker through the gears than your mates with a 16v box? i don't understand what you are trying to say, sorry for being thick!

please get back to me, russ

nope. you get to a higher speed slower as the 8v box is geared for an 8v (lower down torque range). This doesnt necessarily work with the characteristics of the 16v engine....torque kicking in at 4500 - 6000 rpm and the 8v box picking up at around 1800 - 3000 rpm. The box and the engine just dont work together in this respect. The 8v gears are longer than the 16v box, hence 100 mph at 4000 rpm and the 8v (from factory) lower top speed than the 16v.

hope this makes things clearer....

if not PM me and ill send you my mobile number to save keep posting!!!!

i got ya, thanks very much!

i guess a rebuild is the best way forward then. I spoke to TSR and they want around £600 to do the business, seems expensive but to retain the characteristics of the car it has to be worth it.

thanks again for the help, russ
